Making a Connection with Your Regional Admissions Counselor

This may be another invaluable albeit brief blog you will read as you embark on the college application process.

I don’t know why more kids don’t know this, but the admissions staff are assigned to various areas across America. There might be an admissions counselor assigned to Texas, the Midwest, or the Southwest. So when they arrange to visit your specific high school or a local college fair in the evening in your area, or your school hosts a college fair hosting anywhere from 10-20 schools on a special day of the year, the individual representing his/her college has been assigned to your area.

Work to establish a relationship with this individual! He/she may be the first person reviewing your application to decide if you will make the initial cut!

This is the individual you will write a handwritten thank you note to after he/she visits your school.

This is the individual you will write to if you are deferred or waitlisted after to update him/her on your achievements since you applied.

This is the individual you will contact if you are writing the 27,000 dollar letter asking for additional money.

🗝️ If this individual comes to your school, do your homework.

Spend some time on that school’s website and find questions to ask when he/she comes to your campus. It may be a more general but sincere question such as asking them how they ultimately decided on their alma mater instead of another school.

Most importantly, approach the counselor after his/her presentation, make eye contact as you initiate a handshake, and introduce yourself. Simply say, “Hello, my name is Pam Fischer, and I am so excited you are here. Thank you for visiting our school.” Ask for his/her business card. Tape it to the inside of your planner.

And send that handwritten thank you card to this human being immediately so it is waiting for him/her when they return from touring schools across America.
